Where the world's political parties stand on women's rights

The three visualisations provide an overview of the position of political parties in parliaments around the world on women’s rights policies. The main data used was the 2019 Global Party Survey of Pippa Norris (Harvard University).

Party ideology and women's rights policies

The positive relation between party ideology and support for women’s rights in the world's parliaments is strong among parties taking extreme liberal views but weakens among those at midpoint of the ideological spectrum. This relation declines as the income level of countries decreases.

NOTES: Ideology and position are estimated on a 10-point scale: from 0 (‘very liberal’) to 10 (‘very conservative’) and from 0 ('strongly favours policies on women's rights) to 10 ('strongly opposes policies on women's rights'). The diagram includes polled position of 701 political parties in the Lower House of Parliament or Congress in 117 countries. Data excludes parties with missing information on their social values, position on women's rights, and vote share in legislative elections. The World Bank classifies countries into four income groups based on their gross national income (GNI) per capita: high (>USD 12,375), upper-middle (USD 3,996– USD 12,375), lower-middle (USD 1,026– USD 3,995), and low (<USD 3,995).
